Neogen’s GeneSeek is Best-in-Class

10 Reasons Neogen Igenity® is the Best Yak Testing in the World.

1. Neogen is the Largest Tier-1 Genetics Laboratory in the World.

2. Neogen is the Breed Association Standard for Genetic Testing.

3. Neogen is the lab chosen by the Federal Government for your FDA and USDA food safety testing.

4. Neogen is Highly Accredited by American Association of Laboratory Associations, A2LA (unlike other yak genetics research done at Universities).

5. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the future of genetic testing and are Cutting Edge Yak Research.

6. SNPs techniques are the only way to Identify Future Diseases and Congenital Birth Defects. SNPs are also the only method to Identify Future Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs).

7. SNP data offers an Increased Value to Pedigreed, Registered Animals

8. Neogen/GeneSeek provides valuable Information on genetic Impurity, as well as Parental Verification (PV) and Trait Markers. UCDavis cannot provide impurity testing.

9. NAHYR offers Increased Validity with 95 markers.

10. Neogen testing is the only path to achieving status as a Heritage Yak.

1. Neogen’s GeneSeek is the Largest Tier-1 Genetics Laboratory in the World.

WHYC’s current lab is the leading global provider of professional DNA testing. GeneSeek testing is the International Gold Standard: State-of-the-art and world class in genomics and bioinformatics. They work with leading scientists, drive Neogen's world leadership in DNA testing for food production, animal well-being and research. GeneSeek Genomic ProfilersTM (GGP) are the international gold standard for dairy performance testing due to their custom content and innovative design.

2. Neogen is the Breed Association Standard

Neogen's genomics operation is on the forefront of cattle genomics and cattle genomic testing. Neogen is the exclusive provider of DNA testing solutions for AI sire dairy bull studs and a majority of the registered purebred cattle breeding associations (eg. everyone from American Angus Association/Angus Genetics Inc., to Hereford, Simmental, Wagyu, Red Angus, Aberdeen etc.).

3. Neogen is the trusted laboratory of the Federal Government..

GeneSeek/Neogen has had many Government contracts, including the USDA, FDA, FSIS, CDC, GSA, DoD and NASA). U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) bases reporting for food-borne illness and infection rates on Neogen reporting. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety uses their testing for Salmonellosis, Listeriosis, etc. They have the first feed test for FDA-banned materials, including a dairy antibiotic test approved by FDA allows milk producers and processors in the United States to use Neogen's new test to comply with FDA regulations. In 2019 they were awarded a new USDA contract, to supply culture media to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). FSIS uses Neogen Culture Media to monitor raw and ready-to-eat meat and poultry products for the presence of bacterial pathogens. There are many more. Neogen touches your life and personal health many times a day.

4. GeneSeek is Highly Accredited by American Association of Laboratory Associations (A2LA)

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) accredited (ISO 17025) laboratories meet strict requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. GeneSeek lab been delivering ISO accredited genetic results for over a decade. Accreditation is synonymous with both quality and competence of an organization, through the use of international standard(s). A2LA is a third-party body that performs accreditations to various international standards, ensuring an unbiased and objective evaluation of your organization’s functions. A2LA accreditation provides international credibility and compliance to organizations operating within dozens of industries.

5. Future Research Contributions on Yak will be using SNPs

US National Institute of Health (NIH) claims that SNiPs are “the next step in genomic research” and are the future of “identifying genetic diseases.” SNiPs are preferred in human research and are the core of the Human Genome Project and SNP Consortium Collaboration, as well as the Human Haplotype Map Project, 23andMe, Ancestry.com, etc.Research at Madison will contribute to the future body of work on Yak genetics. This is Vanguard Species (Yak) research and it sequences the genomes in order to compare similar genes between species and breeds, using Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNiPs). Next year, University of Wisconsin Madison will be comparing the North American Yak to SNiPs from Tibetan Wild-type yak and Domestic yak on the Tibetan plateau. If preliminary research bares out we will see that WHYC is a Wild-Type Remnant Herd and more closely related to Wild-type yak in Tibet than any other breed.

6. Neogen’s SNPs Identify Future Diseases, and Congenital Birth Defects.

SNiPs allow us the opportunity to develop and apply genome-based strategies for the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease (eg. WHYC’s PRNP marker for Prion disease). Future research will explore many new genetically based yak diseases (eg. Deafness in Royals, Cleft Pallett, etc). SNiPs are good at identifying differences and so they act as biological markers, helping scientists locate genes that are associated with disease. When SNiPs occur within a gene or in a regulatory region near a gene, they may play a more direct role in disease by affecting the gene’s function.

7. WHYC’s Neogen GeneSeek offers an Increased value to pedigreed, registered animals.

Neogen’s GeneSeek testing is at the forefront of cattle genomics and bovine genomic testing, and identifies 130 markers to Davis’ 3 markers. Davis’ 3 (RTM) markers are the same 3 (SNPs) markers that WHYC reports as Breed/Species Specific Traits (but we have 7 total SNPs). This also means that only GeneSeek can offer the exact Percentage of Cattle Introgression, in part due to the increased number of markers used (17 Davis microsatellites vs. 130 GeneSeek base pairs =190 SNPs).

8. Neogen provides valuable Information to inform breeding choices with Parental Verification (PV) and Trait Markers.

9. Our Members have invested decades of effort to get us here and GeneSeek is helping us to further this effort.

This is a program that our team members have worked hard to build for over a decade and with the commitment of many dedicated members and researchers. It was with great enthusiasm that we made these contributions. However this was only achieved with great personal sacrifice of time, money and energy by many involved.

10. Neogen testing is the only path to achieving status as a Heritage Yak.

Warmly,
The Genome and Health Committee
